From the mouth of the river the flat coastal plateau leads to the Outeniqua Mountains, approximately 50 km away. These and the Swartberg Mountains, 100 km north of the Gourits, form two parallel ranges that dominate the southern Cape. In between lies the Little Karoo. In this semi-desert hinterland – karoo is a Khoikhoi word meaning dry and hard – grazing ostriches seem to outnumber people.

The 23.5-km Tierkloof Trail is ideally located in the heart of this landscape, in the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve. Tier or tijger was the name early Dutch farmers gave to leopards and, while these animals are famously rare, they have been sighted along the route.
